Springsteen at Giants Stadium: Long walk home after three hour set

I never realized how wide and varied the audience is at a Springsteen concert.

I don’t mean “Oh gee, there are men and women, young and old, and they all love this man.” I’m talking about the varied amount of testosterone drowning out the gals last night. Drunk, sober, gay, straight, tone deaf, on key, sitting, standing, but every damned one of them seemed to know the words to all the songs.

Last night’s show at Giants Stadium was delayed due to an apparently massive accident on the New Jersey Turnpike. This meant that the show didn’t get done until nearly 1 am. As we walked the spiral down from the nosebleeds and then across the highway in the tube back to Continental Arena Izod Center, the sea of dudes, instead of mooing or baahing, “Whoooa-ooa-ooa-oooaa-ooahhh’ed” to “Badlands”.

I called my mother, who likes to listen in to a song or two when I go to shows, twice during the night. First, during “Light of Day” - which was great because I love that song, but also because I immediately thought of the movie of the same name, starring Joan Jett and Michael J. Fox. One member of Joan’s band in that movie? Mr. Trent Reznor. I giggled to myself because I’m dorky. This song led into “Brilliant Disguise” - a favorite of mine. My mother asked me to call back before 11:15, especially if he played “Born in the U.S.A.” (not likely, sorry, Mom!)

So, I called at 11:10, when Bruce went into his marathon version of “Mary’s Place”. Mom stood on the line for fifty minutes, as Bruce plowed his way through “The Rising” and “Badlands”. My phone must be clear as a freakin’ bell if someone at home can tune in for an hour. I need people to call me from shows!

At the end, we got not only “Jersey Girl”, but “Rosalita”, and for all the delays, heat, drunken dudes, and lack of sleep, I’m feeling okay this morning, if a little groggy. Bruce and E Street always bring it and I’m pretty sure they don’t bring it quite the same way anywhere else but Jersey.

Glad you had a good time. And glad they played Jersey Girl. A colleague of mine made a sign to play it and was having her doubts.

I’m glad you enjoyed yourself. I wanted to go see the Foo Fighters in Toledo. My dh said he didn’t want to go because we just drove down to see Carrie Underwood. I’m sorry but the Foo Fighters are much better then Carrie Underwood. I would drive down to see them in a heart beat. I did enjoy Carrie. She can sing but the Foo Fighters are one of my favs. My mother wouldn’t let me go see Nirvana because she didn’t like his *image*. Now I’m all grown up and I want to see the freakin Foo Fighters!

    I’m done. Sorry. ; )

@Jennifer - Someone I work with saw the Foo last week and I’m jealous. I hear they put on a great show and I joked to TLo that Dave Grohl is the closest any of us will ever get to Nirvana. I’d say he and Foo Fighters have proven that Nirvana is the past :)

@TLo - There were so many signs at the show I thought it was a New Kids concert! Signage never dies!
