Wanna see a magic trick?

The Dark KnightLike many people did this weekend, I went to see The Dark Knight yesterday afternoon. Note to self: Don’t forget iPod headphones in your other purse, or you will be forced to listen to the guy behind you ask his buddies if they want fries approximately six thousand times before turning the topic of discussion to the fact that if they were going to give Juno an Oscar, they should’ve just made a documentary about teenage pregnancy and abortion. So, I repeat, for the love of all that is holy and just, don’t forget your headphones!

I was so worried going into this movie. The hype. Oh, the hype. I was a little sick of hearing about how amazing the movie was and how career-defining Heath Ledger’s role as the Joker was, and how he was a shoe-in for an Oscar nod. I have this pessimistic view of society, in that no one thinks anyone is that good until they are dead. And don’t get me started on all the teenieboppers, who thankfully did not show up at the 2:30 screening yesterday afternoon.

So, amidst all the hype, all the IMAX sellout shows, all the press, all the flailing, screaming teens on the internets, the movie started. And it’s really very excellent. First of all, it has all these great people in it (Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhardt, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman), and it’s missing Katie Holmes (thank you, Xenu). During the badass chase and fight scenes, I kept thinking back to Jack in the 1989 Batman, “Where does he get those wonderful toys?”

Now, about Heath. Do I think his performance deserves the hype? Yes. He was downright creepy as the Joker. Several times (mainly because I’m a wuss), I had to watch through my fingers. Several other times, I was just laughing at the utterly wonderful lunacy. There is definitely something unsettling about him and all the claims that he embodied that character are true. I kept thinking of this character and the completely different role of Ennis in Brokeback Mountain. I’ve not seen a whole lot of Heath’s movies, but it is a shame that we won’t get anymore, because I really believe he was an actor who was only just getting started.

I find it hard to believe that until this weekend, Spider-Man 3 was the box-office winner. While the first two Spider-mans were great, the third one was pretty much utter crap and it in no way deserved to hold any records. While the movie ticket prices are steadily rising, I would say that this one’s worth the money.

Must see movie. Must see Bale in leather bodysuit. Will go alone so as not to embarrass anyone with my persistent drooling!
The only thing this movie needs is the Depp. All is ALMOST right with the world! :)

    Hmmm….

My wife works for Comcast and they got to go to some special screening before it was available to the general public.

Me thinks I should have gone now as opposed to sitting at home studying the ins and outs of Search Engine Optimization.

@TLo - Seriously, what are you waiting for. Get thee to the theater!

@Ben - I would say this movie is light-years more interesting than SEO.

@Michael - I’m sorry, your boy is not in this blog post. But tell Sawyer and Jack hello for me when you see them again.

    Hi Diz,

Ummm… I would have to say that most things are light years more interesting than SEO. Well, it is interesting but it is so involved the brain does tend to turn to mush after a while.

I will share with you another oops. A month or so ago I was in Targe’t and they had two Joker figurines. Just him without an action kit or with Batman or whatever. I guess they are hard to get a hold of now. Oops. $6.99 too!
