R.E.M. at the Garden

R.E.M. @ MSG

Michael Stipe and Peter Buck doin’ what they
do at MSG on June 19.

The number of concerts I’ve been to in the past eleven or twelve years is pretty high compared to the average, I guess. I can’t think of many bands I’d like to see and haven’t yet. Thursday night, I saw R.E.M. at The Garden. That was exciting. I’ve wanted to see them for years and the only things what would’ve made it better (for me) would’ve been Bill Berry on drums and the band playing “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” just so I could mumble along to half the first verse and then scream “Leonard Bernstein!” But I digress.

This was the first show at the Garden where I was able to get floor seats. We were at the far end, but it was a great view. To my delight, no one near me was rowdy in their drunkenness or smelly in their smoking. There was a guy in the row in front of us though, flossing between acts. That’s right. Flossing. At his seat. He spent the rest of the night wrapping his ladyfriend in his arms. I hope she didn’t get tiny pieces of food on her clothes…

So, the show was awesome, and they played a lot of songs off of the new album, Accelerate, as well as older stuff. I quite enjoyed watching Michael Stipe flailing around (now I’ve said… too much). Would definitely see them again.

Tuesday we’re back at MSG for Pearl Jam. This will be my third time seeing them and I know we’re in for a great show. What amuses me every time I go to see Pearl Jam is the amount of frat boys in the audience. To listen to the crowd singing along, you’d never know there were gals in the venue. It’s just a chorus of testosterone!

I think next year, I may have to cut down my concert viewing. It’s time for a real vacation!

I don’t own any REM albums, but they’re a band for which I have a great deal of respect. I’d love to see them live, and that’s a mighty fine set they did.

By the way, there’s a dude who stands on the streetcorner outside our office once every few weeks and brushes his teeth. He smiles and seems to be having a lovely time doing it, and he’s there for, seriously, 20 minutes or so at a time.

@Jeremy - If you get the chance, go. Totally worth it. And there is such a thing as too much hygiene. These dudes don’t know that, I guess!
