Ponderings

Cuz you know it ain’t over till the fat lady sings

After months of speculation, it’s happening.

New Kids on the Block are really and truly reuniting.

Look at the new picture of them. When did Jordan become such a smarmy-looking… meh?

Joe Mac is still cute. Hell, he verges on hot, as far as the group goes. Donnie still looks like a badass. Jon looks good. Hell, even Danny has aged well.

Jordan, what the hell happened?

By the way… I am still not convinced that this reunion is a good thing. Even seeing them all in a room together again. I cherish my past because much of it is safe in the cocoon of nostalgia. Bringing my past into my present is doomed, I tell you!

Coincidentally, I will be in New York City attending a seminar on Friday - the day that NKOTB will be in Rockefeller Center, announcing their return on Today. Attention rabid fans: do not trample me in the Port Authority, okay? You are thirtysomething years old. Grow the fuck up!

For those of you who are (or were) fans, what do you think? Good? Bad? What of the upcoming tour? New songs? Old hits? Do you really want to see these dudes doing the New Kids dance? Who was your favorite? What was your favorite song? Did you see them the first time? Did you realize they were offkey or were you too busy screaming?

Guys, share your childhood hatred, too. It will make me laugh.

I will leave you with a narration of the reunion photo…

Joe: “Hi, I’m Joey Joe. And I may be young, but I’m not too young…”
Jon: “Joe? You’re not young anymore. And you are not singing that song.”
Donnie: “We’re not singing any of that. We’re going to write better songs and sing them. I’ve learned a thing or two in my stellar acting career, and I’m going to act my ass off up there.”
Jordan: “I’m still the leader, right?”
Danny: “Keep telling yourself that, Jordan.”

    Gawd, how I love you, Diz. (;

I’m not entirely sure it’s a good idea. Because, really, most of the songs I do not think will sound right being sung by their present day selves.

    I hope to Goddess they bring out some NEW stuff. Cuz, really, Joe knows how to write some good songs. (;

I used to love these guys. Jordan was my favorite and now he’s just creepy. My fave NKOTB song is the mix version of Call It What You Want. I can’t stomach most of their stuff now and I never liked Joe Mac. I wouldn’t buy an album of new or newly sung old stuff. They just need money I guess.

When I first heard about this a few months back I was really surprised. I’m really not a fan of reunions like this. I wasn’t happy about Take That coming back together and I’m not happy about NKOTB reforming either.

Why do they keep doing that? It’s another thing if they join for a concert but actually making new songs and stuff is really scary. At least the new Take That songs did not suck so I hope NKOTB will do something good too.

Maybe if I was more into these boybands when I was younger I would be more excited about it.

I have to admit I don’t know anything by these guys. All I know is that they existed and I probably know some of their songs if I heard it. But yeah, I’m not too excited.

@Pandora - I love you, too ;) Jordan Knight’s falsetto should not be unleashed. No. Nooooo!

@Nicole - I will still listen to the old stuff for the nostalgia factor. But not “Face the Music”. Just… no. You would think with all the merchandise, tours, albums, and fans, they’d still have money. I mean, 3 of the guys are still into music. Donnie’s a great actor. Jon’s in real estate. Who managed their cash?

@Colin - Oh, I’d forgotten that Take That reunited. I don’t think they were nearly as huge here. I’m not sure being into boybands is a key to excitement. I was a ginormous fan, and I’m not so much excited as worried.

@yoshi - Many would consider you lucky to be oblivous ;)

@jen - Need I remind you that our entire friendship is stemmed from a common love of New Kids? ;)

First, I am jealous that you will be in NYC for the New Kids thing. I (sadly) never went to a NKOTB show, something I still whine about. Ha.

Second, this post reminded me to set my tivo.

Third, that people.com video was great and awkward and did Danny or Jon say anything? I loved the Idol talk - my pop worlds colliding!

Jordan was always my fave, but as I have blogged about, the last 2 times I saw him in STL, he was such a dick. Oh I was mad! But still kind of infatuated…

Step by Step was/is my fave song and video. I also love Tonight. Or This One’s For the Children with the sitting around the piano video. Ha. Ok, I sound nuts now…

Like you, I am slightly worried that they will make ASSES of themselves. Or, it could be awesome - it could go either way. Ha!

@PoP - Well, I was in the same city, but no where near the madness. I did find out after that John Krasinski was also at the studios promoting Leatherheads. Survey says - ditch the seminar next time, Diz!

    Jordan’s been smarmy for a while. ;)

I have mixed feelings.. There’s a big part of me that says “YESS!!! I’LL GO IF THEY COME HERE!!!!111oneoneone” And that’s my inner kid, who’d love the nostalgia. They were some of my first concerts, my first concert roadtrip.. lots of good times.

Then there’s the part of me that’s .. nervous. I’ve gone to a show before, where the artist was trying to make a come back (and it wasn’t even as long as these guys. ;)) but in the end, it just made me sad for what had been, and sad for what now was. It just wasn’t the same at all. (Of course, in that instance, the artist had taken a couple years off for vocal problems. And on trying to come back.. it was sad the way his voice wasn’t there anymore, how his confidence was gone, etc)

And, well.. for years I had bragging rights to say I’d been at NKOTB’s very last concert ever. And now.. I won’t be able to say that anymore. Damn. ;)

@PoP - Do whatchu gotta do, girl. Unleash your inner ten-year old ;)

@Keiran - Yes, well, we both know Jordan’s been smarmy for years. I assume the general public was blissfully ignorant ;) And how did I have no idea you were at the last NKOTB concert? Now you can say “the last one of that century” ;)
