Matchbox Twenty at the Garden

Oh. My. God. How much do I love a good show?

I don’t know who was in charge of sound at The Garden last night, but they did a kickass job. Everyone sounded great: Mute Math, Alanis and her band, and, of course, the boys in MB20. It was pretty much four hours of rocking badassiness and I’m so glad I went.

Alanis was, as usual, amazing. Her voice was great. A little bummed that she only did two new songs (one being “Underneath”, easily found on YouTube right now), but it was nice to be able to sing along to the old stuff. Holy shit, she did “Perfect”. I’ll admit that as I sang along, I got all emotional and felt the tears in my eyes. She followed up that with her cover of “My Humps”, which makes me laugh so much. Thank you, Alanis, for singing a song with some of the stupidest lyrics ever earnestly and proving how ridiculous mainstream music currently is.

Matchbox Twenty was incredible. I’ve seen Rob in concert before so I knew he was going to sound good, and he did not disappoint. The band was tight and I love that they’ve had so many hits over the years. One big singalong, which peaked when we had to sing “Happy Birthday” to the man in the middle. Rob pointed out that 15,000 people sang in 15,000 keys. Make it 14,999. I don’t sing that one. I did, however, sing along to everything else, including “Unwell” and the last song of the night, “Push”. Love, love, love. If this tour shows up in your area, go. Seriously!

One thing that surprised me was how many men were in the audience. It wasn’t even guys being dragged to the show by their girlfriends. It was groups of dudes. I think that’s a testament to the fact that MB20 kick ass.

Alanis Setlist: Moratorium Intro, Uninvited, All I Really Want, 8 Easy Steps, Hand in my Pocket, Underneath, Moratorium, Perfect, My Humps, You Oughta Know, You Learn, Thank U, Ironic

MB20 Setlist: How Far We’ve Come, If I Fall, Real World, Disease, Could I Be You, The Difference, I’ll Believe You When, Back 2 Good, 3AM, Bent, Hang, If You’re Gone, Hand Me Down, All Your Reasons, So Sad, So Lonely, Long Day, These Hard Times, Streetcorner Symphony, Downfall, Bright Lights, Unwell, Argue, Push

MB20 does indeed put on a fantastic show. I was at the Atlanta concert a few years ago that was taped for DVD release. Such wonderful energy, and, as you said, a very tight performance.

@Jeremy - Funny, I’m now considering buying the concert DVD. They are selling USB wristbands of each show.. for $35! The price is a bummer…

@Pandora - If they are in the area, go, go, go! Unfortunately, no pics. I once again did not bring a camera. I really need to buy one of those thin ones you can stick in your back pocket. I’m always worried mine will get confiscated!
