And I’ve got to, got to know

I am one of the few who couldn’t care less about the Superbowl. The most interesting thing about it is not that the Giants are in it, that Tom Petty is playing halftime, or that Paula Abdul’s pretaped performance will be aired. No, the most interesting thing is that JKras is in Phoenix, and he’s rooting for New England…

Ahem. Anyway…

Saw Lenny Kravitz at the Hammerstein on Friday night. The last time I saw him was a few years ago when he opened for Aerosmith. We were in nosebleed and he had no screen. It was awesome, but lacking the magic that is seeing an act like that.

We were four or five “rows” back from the stage (it was standing room general admission on the floor), and holy shit. So close! I had a great time, aside from the extremely rude bitch trying to shove her way closer to the stage all night. Her tactics included befriending others, pretending she was with the Associated Press, and waiting until the extremely drunk people to our right got into a shoving match so she could squeeze into the empty space made when the rest of us were shoved aside. That was fun - so fun I wished I were braver so I could pull her hair and punch her in the face. She told her drunk friend how this was “once in a lifetime” and “do what you have to do”, which is always ironic when you’re watching an act who’s all about Love (Let love rule? Love revolution?). Stupid bitch.

There was also the person or persons behind me who had no respect for personal space and leaned against me the entire time. I stood in the spot I was in and refused to give an inch.

So, while I don’t often go to shows at smaller venues and stand on the floor, this was quite the experience.

As for the music, well, the opener, Lissie, was a mellow folk singer. I felt really bad for her as you don’t realize just how hard it is to play for an uninterested crowd until you’re right up there. She was a trooper though, and I hope to find her songs online to listen uninterrupted.

Poor Lenny had a 102 degree fever (I knew he looked tired), but he played that show with his usual kickassiness. His guitarist, Craig Ross, is amazing. He had a phenomenal solo during one of the new songs and I was highly impressed. Of course, during “Are You Gonna Go My Way”, both of them rocked the place. That is my song and I will never get sick of it.

All in all, the show was worth standing out in the rain (my purse is still soaked) for. But Hammerstein? You may want to stop being assy and let people bring their umbrellas in. They can check them with their coats. And also? People don’t carry cash anymore. WTF do you mean, no credit cards, no ATM? You suck.

Setlist (I think): Bring It On, Dig In, Always on the Run, Mr. Cab Driver, Lady, What the Fuck Are We Saying, Again, Stillness of Heart, I’ll Be Waiting, Where Are We Running, American Woman, Fly Away, Let Love Rule, Are You Gonna Go My Way
