Veintidos: Writer’s Woes

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! I am using auto links for those of you who are taking part, but please feel free to comment anyway!
Week six of TT… and there are only two weeks till National Novel Writing Month!Quickly, today’s 100 in 100: I’m already freaking out about this year’s story. Here are 13 reasons why.

  1. Pre-planning isn’t going as easily as I thought it could. Perhaps this is because I’m not exactly giving up any of my timewasters yet.
  2. I’ve tried this three times before - and only “won” once. And, it was the first time. Beginner’s luck?
  3. I’m going to post each day’s progress on my writer’s journal at LiveJournal. The pressure of an audience! (Entries will be locked, but friend me there if you’d like to read along.)
  4. My muse tends to be fickle. When she’s good, she’s very good, but when she’s bad, she’s horrid. (Yeah, my muse is a chick. I don’t think of my muse as “inspiration” - I think of her as the other person residing in my head - when she isn’t off with the bikers smoking cigarettes.)
  5. November is a busy month at work. I am lazy. I like to come home and do nothing. I know this is a problem.
  6. Oprah & Me: Thyroid buddies. I’ve had thyroid issues forever, but only this year were they diagnosed, since I, you know, actually went to the doc. Are the meds/symptoms gonna kill me? Perhaps I can take the month of November to rest in Hawaii, like Oprah did when she was diagnosed.
  7. Successfully completing a 50K manuscript? Means a rewrite. I managed to complete the first draft of my very first NaNo novel. And for the past four years, I’ve been trying to rewrite it. It’s very, very difficult. Can I deal with another one?
  8. I have a secondary character who I’ve been calling “Sven” as a name placeholder. “Sven” is getting on my nerves. He needs a new name, stat! (Suggestions?)
  9. My inner editor likes to wreak havoc. I have a hard time locking this one into a box. Which makes me think I’m writing better than I am. The whole point is to write crap. There are gems amidst the rubble.
  10. I get discouraged when no one shows interest. Because I am an attention whore? Or just crazy. I want people to care, but I worry that they will. Does that make sense?
  11. They say to “write what you know”, and I know nothing. Seriously. And since I don’t write fantasy, this doesn’t help.
  12. Taking on a project like this is like blinking a month of your life away. Not that I do anything interesting during the rest of the year. It just reminds me how fast time is going.
  13. Two weeks? Two weeks left?! Where is October going, anyway?!

Voice of experience, just start writing and don’t worry about it. I need to take my own advise and start working on the next book and stop researching.

I’m trying this year for the first time! I’ve got so much plotting and character development to do that I’m really panicking…

November is such a busy month…I signed up for NaNo one year, but only wrote about 30K words. I did sign up for NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) this November, however, so we shall see how that goes. Good luck with your story!

Well, that sounds really interesting and quite a challenge. It’s actually making me want to join. Two weeks to sleep on it, but then 2k a day, a blog and life!! Yikes!
Good luck to you and I hope you WIN!!

Wow, you seem stressed. You’re a braver being than I, that’s for sure!

Believe me, I understand how fickle muses can be. I live with a writer…. I hear ALL about it! :) (and love every minute, by the way. Wonderful woman, my wife)

    Happy TT and GOOD LUCK!

I am getting nervous about the upcoming NaNoWriMo too! I had tried a few times in the past, but something always came up that was beyond my prevention. The first year I tried, we were hit by a hurricane and without power and water for the month. It really sucked.

This year, I am hoping that nothing gets in the way.

Oh and I know all about suffering from thyroid issues. I was diagnosed over 10 years ago and I am just now getting my symptoms under control. Stay on the doctors. Since we aren’t Oprah, the doctors will slack off on you if you don’t push. If you still feel icky, let them know. Keep pushing them until you feel “normal” again.

Don’t sweat it. Just write what you want, at your own pace. No one can write a good novel in a month anyway
